Takahiro Fujimoto, D.B.A.
Manufacturing as a System of Design Information
Takahiro Fujimoto is currently a professor in the Graduate School of Economics at the University of Tokyo, a position he has held since 1998. He has also served as executive director of the Manufacturing Management Research Center at the University of Tokyo since 2003. Dr. Fujimoto specializes in technology and operations management, as well as business administration. He holds a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Tokyo (1979) and a Ph.D. from Harvard Business School (1989), where he served as a researcher following graduation and later as visiting professor (1996-97) and senior research associate (1997). He has also served as associate professor on the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo, visiting professor at Lyon University and a visiting researcher at INSEAD. Teruyasu Murakami, Ph.D
The Ubiquitous Network and the Challenges to the Information Systems
Teruyasu Murakami is Chief Corporate Counselor of Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI) and Guest Professor of Faculty of Policy Management of Keio University. He joined NRI in 1968 and engaged in numerous research and consulting projects, including several system dynamics modeling projects in 1970s. After acting as Director of Social and Economic Systems Department and Technology Strategy Department, he became a member of the Board of Directors of NRI in 1996. After holding various executive positions, including director in charge of Internet Business Development, Knowledge Solutions, Consulting, and Corporate R & D, he assumed the present post in April 2002. He has committed to develop the basic concept of the Ubiquitous Network, as a new ICT paradigm and advocated it in the last eight years. He chaired many governmental committees, including Information and Telecommunication Policy Committee and u-Japan (Ubiquitous Net Japan) Policy Committee of MIC and Information Economy Committee of METI and is member of numerous ICT policy related and other committees. He earned a Doctor of Informatics from Kyoto University.

Panel Discussion: "Fusion in Systems Sciences: East and West, Soft and Hard"

Jifa Gu (Panelist)
Jifa Gu is Professor of Operations Research and Systems Engineering at the Institute of Systems Science, Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He had been the President of Systems Engineering Society of China, President of International Federation for Systems Research. He had been Professor in Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology for four years and had paid more than 30 visits to many countries, such as UK, USA, Germany Japan Austria etc. Gu graduated in Peking University majoring computing mathematics and got his Ph. D in USSR Academy of Sciences majoring Operations Research. He has published 200 papers and more than 30 books and proceedings. His interests are inventory, optimization, MCDM, Systems engineering and Systems methodology. In 1994 he had proposed Wuli-Shili-Renli System Approach with Dr. Zhu Zhichang in the center of Systems Studies of University of Hull. He pays much attention to the applications of OR and SE, which cover a lot of fields in energy , water resource, regional development, global change, DSS, various evaluations in projects and organizations, social system and tradition Chinese medicine.

Louis H. Kauffman (Panelist)
Louis H. Kauffman is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he has taught since 1971. He is a topologist with broad interests that include knot theory and its relationships with other mathematics, physics and biology, foundations, cybernetics and systems. He is particularly interested in foundational studies that focus on the act of distinction and the generation of form. Kauffman is the author of numerous papers and books on topology and on topics in cybernetics, including a column on Virtual Logic in the Journal : Cybernetics and Human Knowing. He is the recipient of the Warren McCulloch Award of the American Society for Cybernetics (1993), and is the current president of the American Society for Cybernetics.

David C. Lane, BSc, MSc, DPhil, FORS (Panelist)
David Lane is Reader in Management Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. He is based in both the Operational Research and the Managerial Economics & Strategy groups where he teaches on the Masters degrees in Management, OR and Decision Sciences.
His research, teaching and consultancy focus on problem structuring techniques for strategic thinking, in particular system dynamics, strategic modelling and systems thinking. His theoretical work deals with the relationship between system dynamics and other systems approaches and on the contribution that system dynamics can make to the formalisation of certain concepts arising in sociological theory. His practical interests are varied, including: problems in healthcare management; the dynamics of project management; and the creation of marketing strategies for cinema films. He has worked with many companies, consulting firms and government organisations.
He has mathematics degrees from Bristol and Oxford Universities and a Doctorate in mathematical modelling also from Oxford. He was a consultant in Shell International (where he led the system dynamics group) and a marketing manager in Shell UK.
Dr. Lane has published widely in international academic journals. He serves on the editorial boards of the journals Systems Research and Behavioral Science and International Journal of Operational Research and is a contributing editor to International Abstracts in OR.
He is co-editor of the SR&BS collections emerging from the series of European System Dynamics Workshops: ‘Rationality in System Dynamics’ (2004); ‘System Dynamics in Organizational Consultation’ (2006); ‘Formal Theory Building Using System Dynamics’ (to appear in 2008).
He is a member of the Council of the Operational Research Society, and of the Policy Council of the International System Dynamics Society. He is also a Fellow of the OR Society and an Academic Governor of the London School of Economics.

G. A. Swanson, Ph.D., D. Litt, CPA, ret. (Panelist)
G. A. Swanson is a former president of ISSS. He is Professor of Accounting at Tennessee Technological University. He is a CPA ret., founder of the Tennessee Society of Accounting Educators, and former council member of the TSCPA Educational Foundation. Dr. Swanson has published several books and numerous scholarly articles in such journals as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accountancy, Systems Research and Behavioral Science (SR&BS), International Journal of Social Economics, and Systems Practice. He is serving on editorial boards of SR&BS, Systems-Journal of Transdisciplinary Systems Science, Journal for Information Systems and Systems Approach and International Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics.

Tatsuyuki Negoro (Panel Chair)
Tatsuyuki NEGORO　is Professor of Information Systems & Management of Business School and Chief Director of Research Institute of Information Technology and Management at Waseda University. After graduating Kyoto University, majoring in Sociology, in 1977 he joined a steel company and had been mainly engaged in the production management and the corporate planning division. In 1983, he received an MBA from the Graduate School of Business Administration of Keio University. In 1990, he spent a year as Visiting Researcher at Hull University in the U. K. He is Former Chief-editor of the Journal of the Japan society of Management and Information Science, Editorial Board of the Journal of Systems Research & behavioral Science and is Vice President of CRM Forum JAPAN. His research filed is crossing area of Strategic Management, Information Systems and Systems Methodologies. He has written and edited several books about the area, and published over 100 articles. Hiroshi Deguchi, Ph.D.
Systems Sciences Toward the New Liberal Arts for the Global Society of 21st Century
Hiroshi Deguchi, Dr. of Science (Tokyo Institute of Technology, 1986), Dr. of Economics (Kyoto University, 2001) Hiroshi Deguchi was born in Tokyo in 1955. He graduated Tokyo Institute of Technology and got the first degree. Department of Economics, Fukushima University (1987-), International University of Japan (1989-), Department of Commercial Science, Chuo University (1995-), Graduate School of Economics, Kyoto University (1997-). From 2001 he is a Professor of Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science, Tokyo Institute of Technology. He is the Leader of 21st-Century COE Program “Creation of Agent-Based Social Systems Sciences (ABSSS)” and the Head of the Research Center for Agent-Based Social Systems Sciences, Tokyo Institute of Technology. He also currently serves as a senior visiting scientist, Economic and Social Research Institute, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan for the project of reconstructing SNA (Systems of National Accounts depending on his theory of social complex systems (H. Deguchi, Economics as an Agent-Based Complex System, Springer-Verlag, 2004). His research interest covers the wide area of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary fields including mathematics, organizational & management sciences, economics, evolutionary economics, sociology, anthropology, gaming simulation, agent based modeling and philosophy of sciences. He serves as a board member of Japan Association for Evolutionary Economics, The Japan Association for Social and Economic Systems Studies, Pacific-Asian Association for Agent-based Approach in Social Sciences, Japan Association for Philosophy of Science, Japan Association of Simulation and Gaming. He is also an editor of Springer Series on Agent Based Social Systems, Springer-Verlag. Debora Hammond, Ph.D
Steps Toward a Sustainable Future
Debora Hammond is Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State University (in Northern California), where she recently completed her tenth year. She received a doctorate in the History of Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1997. Her graduate research focused on the history of systems thinking, and the results of her dissertation research have been published as The Science of Synthesis: Exploring the Social Implications of General Systems Theory (2003). Dr. Hammond's teaching revolves around the core issues of ecological sustainability and social justice ・how to create a healthy society that works for everyone. She has recently been teaching upper division seminars on Health and Healing, The Global Food Web, and A Systems View of the World. Since 2003, Dr. Hammond has been coordinating the Northern California Earth Institute, an organization that nurtures community dialogue on themes relating to the environment and sustainable living.

Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Ph.D
Building Back Aceh Better Through Reconstruction and Reintegration:
A Joint Peace-Keeping Effort
Dr. Ir. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto was appointed Director of the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR) when it was established in April 2005. Dr. Kuntoro brings to the BRR a distinguished track record in government and academia, and extensive experience in international relations, development, emergency relief coordination and economic growth.
Dr. Kuntoro has held a number of senior management positions in Indonesia’s state-enterprise sector, as well as in government. He was named President Director of PT Tambang Timah Tbk in 1989 and succeeded in saving the company from bankruptcy by implementing an extensive restructuring program. He left the company in 1994 to become Director General of Mines at the Indonesian Ministry of Mines & Energy, and then served as Deputy Chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) in 1997. He acted as Minister of Mines and Energy in 1998-1999 and assumed the role of President of state electricity company PT PLN in 2000.
Dr. Kuntoro currently sits on the boards of several national and multinational companies, including PT Unilever Indonesia and PT Semen Cibinong (Holcim Group). In the past, he served on the boards of Gulf Indonesia Resources Limited, PT Kabelindo Murni, and ConocoPhillips. He has served as a member of the National Economic Council, the National Research Council, and on the Board of Advisors of the Indonesia Boy Scouts Council. Dr. Kuntoro was actively involved in intitial reflief efforts in Aceh immediately following the tsunami through his work with the Global Rescue Network, the Indonesia Rescue Network (IndoRescue) and Wanadri (Youth Jungle Explorer and Mountaineering Association).
An energy resource and business management expert, Dr. Kuntoro is an Associate Professor in Decision Science at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). In 1982, he established the Graduate School of Transportation and in 2003, he founded the School of Business and Management at the ITB.
In addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from the ITB, Dr. Kuntoro has Master’s Degrees in Industrial Engineering and Civil Engineering from Stanford University, USA, and a Ph. D in Engineering Science – Decision Science from ITB. Dr. Kuntoro is a published author, including the college textbook Analisa Keputusan (Decision Analysis). He has also received several prestigious awards, including the Adhicipta Rekayasa Award for Engineering Excellence presented by the Indonesian Engineers Association in 1995 and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Award for Engineering Excellence in 1996. In February 2006, he was honored as the 26th Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellow by the Government of Singapore.

Gerald Midgley, Ph.D
Towards a New Framework for Evaluating Systemic and Participative Methods
Gerald Midgley is a Senior Science Leader in the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), a government research institute in New Zealand. He also has Visiting or Adjunct Professorships at the University of Hull (UK), the University of Queensland (Australia) and Victoria University (New Zealand). He has had over 200 papers published in international journals, edited books and practitioner magazines, and his research on the methodology of systemic intervention has been informed by his involvement in a wide variety of community development projects. Amongst other books, he is the author of Systemic Intervention: Philosophy, Methodology, and Practice (Kluwer/Plenum, 2000); editor of Systems Thinking, Volumes I-IV (Sage, 2003); and co-editor of Community Operational Research: OR and Systems Thinking for Community Development (Kluwer/Plenum, 2004).

Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah is currently Ambassador of Ghana to Japan, a position he has held since 2001. Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah has also served as the High Commissioner of Ghana to Singapore, Popua New Guinea, and Australia from 2001 to 2006. Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah was Development advisor at Learning and Skills Development Agency, London. Mike C. Jackson, Ph.D
Critical Systems Thinking and Its Contribution to 21st Century Management Practice
Michael C. Jackson is Professor of Management Systems and Dean of Hull University Business School. After graduating in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, he spent four years in the civil service. He has since gained masters degrees from Oxford and Lancaster and a PhD from the University of Hull, being appointed a full professor in 1989. He is a Chartered IT Professional and a Fellow of the British Computer Society, the Cybernetics Society, the Chartered Management Institute and the Operational Research Society. Professor Jackson has been Chairman of the UK Systems Society, and President of the International Federation for Systems Research and the International Society for the Systems Sciences. He is a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (New Delhi), Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima, Peru, and at Wuhan University of Technology and Xiamen University China.
Professor Jackson edits the international journal Systems Research and Behavioral Science. He has written and edited many books about systems thinking and management science, and published over 100 articles in refereed journals. His two latest books are Systems Approaches to Management (Kluwer/Plenum, 2000) and Systems Thinking : Creative Holism for Managers (Wiley, 2003 - currently being translated into Chinese, Spanish Japanese and Vietnamese). Professor Jackson has undertaken many consultancy engagements with outside organisations, both profit and non-profit. These assignments have included the introduction of systems thinking into British Telecom at the senior management level; the development of IT strategy with PA Management Consulting Group; a national project to design evaluation systems for Councils for Voluntary Service; evaluation work with Humberside Training and Enterprise Council; and a study of organisational change in prisons.

Soho Machida, Ph.D.
New Paradigm of Civilization in the 21st Century
Professor at Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University.
Born in Kyoto in 1950. Spent 20 years as a Zen monk in the Daitokuji monastery of Kyoto. At the age of 34, moved to the US and earned Master of Theological Studies in Harvard University, and Ph.D. in University of Pennsylvania. Was Assistant Professor at Princeton University (90-98), Associated Professor at National University of Singapore (98-00), and Professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (00-06). He is also an fellow of International Peace Research Institute of Oslo, and a councilor of Japanese Association for Religious Studies, Research Areas: Comparative Religion, Comparative Civilizations, Bioethics. He extensively travels around the world to gives public talks on religious perspectives of human culture. Author of about 20 books including Renegade Monk (U. of California Press), Can Mankind Beat “Religion”?(NHK Books), Why Does Religion Prevent Peace? (Kodansha), Sacred Mountains in Japan (Kodansha), etc.

Yoshiteru Nakamori, Ph.D
Knowledge Pentagram System
Professor Yoshiteru Nakamori is currently the dean of the school of knowledge science at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Ishikawa, Japan. His fields of research interest cover identification and measurement optimization of large-scale complex systems, modeling and control of environmental systems, and methodology and software of decision support systems. His recent work focused on knowledge management systems based on the concept of knowledge-action unification.

Gary S. Metcalf, Ph.D.
Rigor and Relevance in Systems Work
Gary Metcalf is the President-Elect for the ISSS for 2007-2008. He also currently serves as a Vice President on the Executive Committee for the International Federation for Systems Research. His Ph.D. was done under the mentorship of Bela H. Banathy, through Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco, CA. \\Professionally, Gary Metcalf is the president of InterConnections, LLC, an organizational consulting firm based in Ashland, KY, USA. He is also a part-time faculty member in the Organizational Systems concentration at Saybrook Graduate School, with the Federal Executive Institute (Office of Personnel Management, US Federal Government), and with the Bhavan Marshall MBA Program in Bangalore, India.
