From working as a neurological researcher Maturana developed an understanding of both the role of the observer in determining the outcome of scientific research and the interconnectedness of the processes of control and communication, especially in cognition. Developing this, he proposed a way of looking at life such that it was the continuation of living (autopoiesis). Since then he has developed an extensive and far-reaching epistemology and theory of observation (and of the construction of observational realities) through extensing this work.
